About This Project
The world is digital. Every child at GreenHill deserves the skills to thrive in it.
The GreenHill Skills and Computer Lab is a major future development project planned for GreenHill Community School. Following the establishment of permanent classroom buildings, this initiative will expand learning opportunities by providing children with access to digital education, vocational training, and practical skills development.
The project reflects Beacon Child Africa’s commitment to ensuring that children in rural Uganda are prepared for an increasingly digital and skills-driven world. By introducing technology and practical training within the school environment, GreenHill students will gain the knowledge, confidence, and abilities needed to pursue further education, employment, and entrepreneurship opportunities.
The project will support:
- Children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years.
- Digital literacy and vocational skills training.
- Community learning opportunities through evening and weekend access.
- Equal participation opportunities for girls in technology.
The Challenge
Why This Project Matters Now
Technology is transforming education, employment, communication, and access to information across Uganda and the wider African continent. However, many children in rural communities remain excluded from digital learning opportunities due to limited access to computers, internet connectivity, and technology education.
Without exposure to digital skills, many rural learners complete primary education without the confidence and abilities needed for secondary school, modern workplaces, or technology-based opportunities.
The Digital Skills Gap
Children in urban areas often have access to computers, digital tools, and online learning resources from an early age. Rural children, however, frequently lack these opportunities, creating a growing gap in digital literacy and future readiness.
Providing access to computers, tablets, and digital learning resources at GreenHill will help ensure students develop essential skills that are increasingly required in education, employment, and entrepreneurship.
Limited Access to Practical Skills Training
Many young people in rural communities complete their education with academic knowledge but lack practical skills that can help them create sustainable livelihoods.
By integrating vocational training into the GreenHill learning environment, students will gain hands-on skills that match local economic opportunities and prepare them for future independence.
What We Are Building
The GreenHill Skills and Computer Lab will establish a permanent, purpose-built learning facility that combines digital education with practical vocational training.
These skills will help young people develop confidence, creativity, and practical abilities that can support future employment or entrepreneurship.
The project will include:
Computer and Technology Learning Space
A dedicated computer laboratory equipped with computers, tablets, and reliable internet connectivity to support digital learning.
Digital Skills Curriculum
Students will follow a structured digital literacy programme aligned with Uganda's education standards, covering essential technology skills for the modern world.
Vocational Training Equipment
The lab will include practical training resources for skills relevant to local opportunities and community needs.
Digital Learning Resources
Students will have access to educational materials, online resources, and technology-based learning tools.
Training and Certification Programmes
Older students and young adults will have opportunities to participate in skills training programmes that support career development and entrepreneurship.
Community Learning Access
The facility will extend beyond school hours by offering evening and weekend sessions that allow community members to access training opportunities.
Girls in Technology Programmes
Special sessions will encourage girls to participate in digital learning and help address the gender gap in technology access.
Digital Literacy
Students will develop essential digital skills, including computer operation, typing, word processing, internet navigation, online safety, and the use of productivity tools.
Vocational Skills Training
Students will receive practical training in areas that align with local economic opportunities, including tailoring, carpentry, catering, agricultural enterprise, and small business management.
Our Goals
The GreenHill Skills and Computer Lab aims to achieve:
- Training over 300 students annually.
- Achieving 50% girls participation in technology and skills programmes.
- Offering more than 10 digital and vocational skills.
- Providing community access beyond regular school hours.
Through this project, GreenHill will become a centre where children and community members can access knowledge, technology, and skills for the future.

It will bridge the gap between GreenHill Community School and the future GreenHill Secondary School by ensuring students leave primary education equipped with practical skills and confidence.
