Beacon Child Africa

Mental health matters. Every child deserves support.

The Safe Space in Schools Programme provides school-based psychosocial support, counselling, and mental health education for children facing trauma, stress, anxiety, and emotional challenges. Through safe and supportive environments, we help learners develop emotional resilience, improve their wellbeing, and build the confidence needed to succeed academically and socially.

The Challenge

Many children experience emotional and psychological challenges that affect their learning, relationships, and overall development. Trauma, family difficulties, poverty, violence, displacement, bullying, and social pressures can leave children struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation.

In many communities, access to professional mental health support remains limited. As a result, many children face these challenges without the guidance and care they need.

Schools provide an important opportunity to identify children who need support early and create safe environments where learners can express themselves, develop coping skills, and receive appropriate assistance.

Our Goals

Through the Safe Space in Schools Programme, we aim to strengthen children’s emotional wellbeing and create supportive learning environments.

Our goals include:

  • Supporting over 500 children through school-based mental health programmes.
  • Partnering with more than 25 schools to provide accessible psychosocial support.
  • Training over 30 counsellors and caregivers in child-centred mental health approaches.
  • Achieving measurable improvements in children’s emotional wellbeing and resilience.

Who We Serve

The programme supports children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 who experience emotional, social, or psychological challenges.

We prioritise:

  • Children experiencing trauma, anxiety, depression, or emotional distress.
  • Students affected by family violence, poverty, or displacement.
  • Young people facing bullying, peer pressure, or identity challenges.
  • Learners experiencing crises who require immediate psychosocial support.

What We Do

The Safe Space in Schools Programme creates accessible mental health support systems within schools and communities. We work with learners, teachers, families, and local partners to ensure children receive the emotional care and guidance they need.

Our services include individual and group counselling, mental health education, peer support activities, and crisis intervention. We also train teachers and caregivers to recognise signs of emotional distress and respond appropriately.

By integrating mental health support into school environments, we help create spaces where children feel safe, valued, and understood.
