Education has the power to transform lives. Through the Back to School Programme, Beacon Child Africa works to identify, support, and reintegrate children who are out of school or at risk of dropping out, ensuring they have the opportunity to learn, grow, and build a better future.

Why Children Are Out of School

Across rural Uganda, many children face barriers that prevent them from accessing and completing their education. Poverty, long distances to schools, child labour, early marriage, family responsibilities, and limited awareness about the importance of education continue to keep many children away from classrooms.

Girls are particularly affected by these challenges. Cultural expectations, early pregnancies, and unequal access to education often force many girls to leave school before completing their studies, limiting their future opportunities and increasing the likelihood of continued poverty.

Without support, vulnerable children risk being trapped in cycles of disadvantage that affect future generations.

How We Support Children

Community Outreach and Identification

We work within rural communities to identify children who are out of school or at risk of dropping out through household visits, community engagement, and awareness campaigns.

School Enrolment Support

We assist vulnerable children with school registration, placement, learning requirements, bursaries, and financial support to help them return to education.

Girls' Education Support

We promote equal access to education by engaging communities, challenging harmful practices, and supporting girls facing barriers such as early pregnancy and cultural pressures.

Parent and Caregiver Awareness

We educate families and caregivers about the importance of education and encourage them to actively support children's learning journeys.

School Monitoring and Follow-Up

We regularly track children's attendance, engage with schools and teachers, and provide ongoing support to prevent dropout.

Education Partnerships

We collaborate with schools, teachers, and local education authorities to strengthen support systems for vulnerable learners.

Bringing Children Back Into Education

The Back to School Programme focuses on reaching children in vulnerable communities, understanding the challenges they face, and providing practical support that enables them to return to and remain in school.

Our team works together with parents, teachers, community leaders, and local partners to identify children who are out of school and develop solutions based on their individual needs.

We go beyond school enrolment by providing continuous follow-up, monitoring attendance, supporting families, and addressing challenges that may cause children to drop out again.
