Beacon Child Africa

Health and education are not separate. A healthy child is a present, engaged and thriving learner.

The Mobile Health Clinic and Girls’ Wellbeing Programme is an integrated health initiative by Beacon Child Africa designed to provide essential healthcare services to students at GreenHill Community School and children within surrounding rural communities.

The programme brings healthcare closer to children who have limited or no access to medical services, ensuring that health challenges do not become barriers to education and development.

The initiative places special focus on boarding students who are separated from their families and depend entirely on the school environment for their health, safety, and wellbeing. It also prioritises girls’ health by addressing menstrual challenges that often affect attendance and participation in school.

The programme will provide:

  • Health support for students and surrounding communities.
  • Six essential health services during clinic visits.
  • Priority care for boarding students.
  • Dedicated girls’ wellbeing support.

The Challenge

Why This Project Matters Now
Access to basic healthcare remains a major challenge for many children living in rural Uganda. Health facilities are often located far from schools and communities, while transport costs make medical care difficult for many families to access. As a result, children may continue attending school while experiencing untreated illnesses, pain, or health challenges that affect their ability to learn. Girls also face additional barriers when they lack access to menstrual hygiene products and proper menstrual health education.

Limited Healthcare Access in Rural Communities
Many children in rural areas do not receive timely medical attention because healthcare services are difficult to reach. Common illnesses may go untreated, while emotional and psychological challenges often remain unnoticed. Students experiencing trauma, loss, stress, or emotional distress may have limited access to counselling and psychosocial support.

The Vulnerability of Boarding Students
Boarding students face additional risks because they live away from their families and rely on the school environment for daily care and support. Without accessible health services within the school setting, these students have limited options when they experience illness, emotional challenges, or personal health concerns.

Menstrual Health Challenges Among Girls
Menstruation remains a significant barrier to girls’ education in Uganda. Many girls miss school because they lack access to sanitary products, menstrual health information, or supportive environments where they can discuss their needs. Repeated absence due to menstruation can create learning gaps and increase the risk of girls falling behind or leaving school entirely.

Creating Safe Spaces for Children

Through the Safe Space in Schools Programme, we are helping children develop emotional strength, improve their wellbeing, and achieve their full potential.

Our impact includes:

  • Over 500 children supported through mental health programmes.
  • More than 25 partner schools reached.
  • Over 30 counsellors trained.
  • 80% targeted improvement in children’s wellbeing outcomes.

Our Goals

The Mobile Health Clinic and Girls’ Wellbeing Programme aims to achieve:

  • 100% of girls receiving sanitary pads.
  • Monthly clinic visits for students and community members.
  • Delivery of six essential health services during each clinic visit.
  • Reducing school days missed due to menstruation to zero.

These goals will help create a healthier school environment where children can focus on learning and personal growth.

Why This Project Matters

The Mobile Health Clinic and Girls’ Wellbeing Programme is about more than healthcare. It is about protecting children’s dignity, confidence, and ability to participate fully in education. Every service provided is designed around the needs and safety of children. Girls’ health sessions are conducted in private spaces and supported by female staff. Counselling services are confidential, and health referrals are handled with sensitivity to each child’s circumstances.

The programme also strengthens the capacity of teachers and school staff by helping them identify signs of illness, emotional distress, and menstrual health challenges early so that children receive timely support. When children are healthy, they attend school more consistently, engage more actively in learning, and have greater opportunities to achieve their potential.
